Coach Jill Smitherman has a decade of coaching experience in high school
volleyball. In her first 2 seasons the West Broward High School’s Lady Bobcats
went 33 and 9 under Coach Smitherman. The 2009 varsity team’s record was 17
and 5 capping off the season with their first District Championship in Division 6A.
Additionally, the team advanced to the second round of regionals. Coach has
now embraced the Junior Varsity program and pushed them to achieve second in
the Coral Springs JV Tournament. Bobcat volleyball has quickly become a
contending Broward county program. Coach Smitherman was selected by the
BCAA as the 2008 South Area All-Star Team’s Head Coach.
Jill is a native of Long Island, New York where she started playing volleyball in
high school. She went on to play in college at the University of Albany for 2 years
and then transferred to Cortland College where she played for 2 years. At
Cortland College, Jill was the squad’s Co-Captain in her senior year and led the
team to a season finishing ranking of 5th in the nation. Jill then returned to Long
Island, where she started teaching and coaching at Sachem High School. Coach
Smitherman was the Assistant Coach for the Boy’s and Girl’s Varsity teams,
Boy’s and Girl’s Junior Varsity Coach as well as the Head Coach for the Girl’s
Freshman Team for 3 years.
Most recently Jill had been part of the teaching staff at Cypress Bay High School
for 5 years. Coach Smitherman held the positions of Assistant Varsity Coach and
helped lead the Lightning Girl’s Division 6A to 4 District Championships, 1
Regional Championship, and an appearance in the State Playoffs. All the while,
Coach led the Lightning’s Junior Varsity program to a record of 65 and10 over 5
seasons and 2004 Cardinal Gibbons’ Invitational Tournament Championship.
